26th Marines Association – 2010 Reunion San Antonio, Texas

Reunion Notification and Dues Letter

Date:    March, 30, 2010
To:       All 26th Marines Association Members of record
From:   26th Marine Association Executive Committee "26th Marines Association"

Members- Preparation for the 26th Marine Association 2010 San Antonio, Texas Reunion are complete.  Our San Diego reunion was another super success.  We had good attendance and reached our goal in regards to leaving each year's reunion with the next year's reunion determined.

Our 2010's site was determined at the 2009's Annual Membership meeting to be San Antonio, Texas.  In addition three cities were selected for 2011's reunion (New York City, St. Augustine or a city in the area of the New Marine Corps Museum) to be voted on at our 2010 Membership meeting in San Antonio.

We will be staying at the Historic Menger Hotel this year in San Antonio, Texas, across the street from the Alamo and two blocks away from River Center and the many attractions on the San Antonio River Walk.  The Menger is the oldest continually operated hotel, west of the Mississippi.  See http://mengerhotel.com/ for more information.

Please check our site www.26thMarines.com often for updates as they may occur. The purpose of this letter is 2010 Reunion Notification and request Annual Membership dues.

The fees for this 2010's reunion are as follows:

1. Annual Membership Dues $40.00 per year.
2. Registration fee will be $25.00 per person, members and each member's guest(s).
3. Banquet fee will be $40.00 per person, members and guest(s).

First, the annual membership fee is due to the Secretary by June 1, 2010. (Thanks to you who have already paid!)  Make checks payable to "26th Marines Association".  All payments received after that date will incur a $10.00 per annum fee.

While the registration and banquet fees are not due until July 15, 2010, if possible, please also submit your registration fees and banquet fees for each person attending, including you, family and friends, as soon as possible.  But again, we will accept the Registration fee and Banquet fee or changes to them, as late as July 31, 2009.

Remember, the sooner we have a firm count, reservations made, etc., the more smoothly things flow after that.

Sonny will also be including a statement with your dues notice showing any arrears you may have.  Please work with Sonny quickly to work out a deal to bring your arrears up to date.  Remember the financial integrity of our organization depends on our “yearly” dues.

This notice is being  emailed to those members of record during 2009 only.  If you do not need a hard copy, please let Sonny know today.  Hard copies will be mailed out April 3, 2010 to those needing them.

Of course if you don’t need the hard copy, it will save our organization costs of paper, envelopes, postage etc.

Please feel free to copy this notice and give or send to anyone you know who may be interested in our Association. If you have any questions, feel free to contact any of us.

All photos of past reunions have been posted.  You can find references to these on our website www.26thMarines.com.  If you have any you would like included, please forward them to Sonny at ghollub@austin.rr.com.

When making your reservations at the Menger Hotel, the following is a description of the three basic types of rooms to consider.  The earlier you reserve… the better choice of room style you will have.

They are as follows:

Antique Wing – Original wing of hotel built in 1859, furnished with antiques, high ceilings, “step up” bathrooms (plumbing under the floor).  Bed type choices:  room with a king bed, or a queen bed, or a double bed.

Center Wing – Built in 1950’s, more modern contemporary rooms, some small rooms in this wing.  Bed type choices:  room with a king bed or a queen bed or a double bed

Newest Wing – Built between the 1960’s-1980’s, largest rooms in the hotel.  The only bed type in this wing are rooms with two double beds.  Some rooms face the pool and have balconies, overlooking the pool.  You need to request “new wing, poolside balcony” if you want this room type/location when calling in to make reservation.

Thanks and Semper Fi !!

We will have 8 free passes.  If we go over that, they have reduced the normal daily parking fee of $25.00 to $15.00 per day for us.

Please let Sonny know if you will have a car to be parked (tags will be provided with your name on it).

Shuttle from airport to hotel:

There is no free shuttle from the airport.

If you do want to be picked up, let Sonny know your arrival date and time as soon as possible and he will try to arrange his working and drinking to accommodate your schedule.  But no promises.

However, there is a city shuttle called “SA Trans” that leaves every 15-30 minutes from outside the baggage claim area.  Our hotel is one of the first to be dropped off.  Cost is $18.00 one way or $34.00 round trip.

Plus one special feature for those of you who like to celebrate Halloween.

For the oldest hotel west of the Mississippi, the Menger, there is one most often repeated ghost story.

There was a chambermaid in the late 1800’s named Sally White, who met her demise outside the front of the hotel, at the hands of purportedly, her husband.

He shot her and she dragged herself into the hotel and lingered a few days, then passed away.

The hotel paid for her funeral ($32.00 - this can be read on the hotel ledger that is in the glass cases at the other end of the main lobby.)

Sally (the ghost) reportedly walks the halls.  One hotel guest called the front desk and complained that she requested towels and the maid walked by and ignored her.  The front desk clerk asked the guest what the maid looked like, and the guest described the attire of the maids back in the 1800’s, so they think it was Sally White.

There are numerous stories in a book that is sold in the gift shop downstairs called “The History and Mystery of the Menger Hotel” if anyone really wants to know more about the hotel than what appears on the hotels website http://mengerhotel.com/. And this for Halloween!!! (Eileen you are going to like this… LOL).

Also Eileen (Bill “Shrub” Hall’s Wife) says she plans to dress up in costume.  If anyone would like to join her, coordinate that with her.  If you do not know their email, send your request to me and I will forward it to her.

I will join Eileen and come as a hillbilly with more chins than a Chinese Phone Book
